There is many hotels in JB, most hotels have a signs marking "HOTEL", but some budget places are also known as Chalets, Budget Accommodations or Rumah Tumpangan. A budget hotel in the city center will cost around RM50 - RM100 per room per night. The backpacker hostels not very common in JB unlike in Melaka, Kuala Lumpur and Georgetown. There are about eleven hotels clustered around Jalan Meldrum - this street runs parallel between Jalan Tun Abdul Razak and Jalan Wong Ah Fook between the police station and City Square. The names of these hotels are Hotel Dragon Inn (formerly known as Top Hotel), Gateway, Grand Paradise (formerly known as Causeway Inn), Hanyasatu (formerly known as Fortuna Hotel), Hawaii, Hong Kong, JB, Meldrum, A Vista Melati.

All "basic-package" rooms come with attached bathrooms. Hong Kong Hotel , 31A Jalan Meldrum (opposite Merlin Tower), 2246407, offers the cheapest double rooms in the Jalan Meldrum area, starting from 48 RM net per night per double room (This rate is likely seasonal. On 4 July, 2010 it was even cheaper. 42 RM double). All 22 rooms with air-con, attached bath/shower and toilet, but no TV. You have to climb a flight of stairs to reach the reception. Bring a can of disinfectant and your own sheets if you care about cleanliness, because THEY don't. But, that said, it does have a safe/private atmosphere, and it's by no means the worst place. At least it has drain traps and doesn't stink of sewerage!

Rooms start from RM 45, with hot water shower, AC and in-room TV. Some 15km from the Johor Bahru city center but buses to/from the city are aplenty.

Previously known as the Hyatt Regency, the hotel was given a long-overdue renovation in 2009/2010 and is now one of JB's best again, although the location is awkward if using public transport, with very limited selection of shops or restaurants nearby. Its rooms are large and very well maintained and it has one of the best views for hotel chains in Johor Bahru. It has three restaurants (Glass, Steps and Oasis), two bars, one outdoor swimming pool and two tennis courts. Other facilities: ballroom, meeting and function rooms, banquet hall, massage parlor, sauna, spa. Room rates start from RM190++ per room per night (walk-in rates and rates with reservation are similar; buffet breakfast extra 20RM net per person). Non Wi-Fi Internet surfing is available in all the rooms, at 57RM net per 24 hrs (min. charge of 57RM net, use your own laptop). Its greatest advantage is that it is located within a duty free zone and shares the same building as the ZON Mall and ZON Shopping Centre. The hotel has the usual 5-star hotel amenities: swimming pools, spa, gymnasium, business center, grand ballroom, convention and exhibition center, 6 function rooms, 2 auditoriums, shops, bar, four restaurants (Salt 'N' Pepper Cafe Restaurant, Lotus Garden Chinese Restaurant - see 'Eat, splurge' section, Poolside BBQ and Ayukawa Japanese Restaurant).
